Season Update - January 16th, 2017
As we approach mid January, it is hard to believe that we have been on snow for almost 2 months, and West Yellowstone ski festival is a distant memory. December's races provided a good starting base for our athletes, with the first SuperTour December 3-4 in West Yellowstone and then the Intermountain Division (IMD) first Junior National Qualifier in Jackson Hole, WY December 16-17. Maddie Morgan secured a 3rd place finish in the SuperTour Junior Skate Sprints as well as top 10th Junior woman in the Classic 10k. Some top finishes for the first JNQ included a 6th, 7th and 10th place finish respectively for Savanna Fassio, Jenae Rasmussen and Maddie Morgan in the Classic 5k. Sabine Wilson took 5th in the Classic 3k, Liam Wallis 3rd, Reed Chamberlain 6th, and Janne Koch 12th in the Classic 3k. Logan Chamberlain and Aidan Rasmussen took 4th and 9th in their Classic 5k. In Sunday's Skate race, Logan skied to an impressive 2nd place finish, while Lina Farra took 6th, and Daniel brought in a strong 9th place in his 10k. Savanna took 3rd in her 7.5k race.
The team spent the latter part of December training in Park City, enjoying the groomed trails of White Pine, Round Valley and UOP. The U16,18 and 20 athletes stepped up their preparations for Sr. Nationals out at Soldier Hollow, January 6-12. How lucky we were to have this amazing event right here in our back yard! It was a week of challenge with the weather presenting ever-changing conditions, but our athletes had the chance to ski with the top skiers in the country. What an experience! They persevered, and skied strong.
Our team was also represented at the 2nd Wasatch Citizen Series race held on Saturday, January 7 at White Pine Nordic Center. Xander Burkemo, Aidan Rasmussen, Reed Chamberlain brought in 1st place finishes in their age groups, while Janne and Stine Koch had impressive 3rd place finishes in their divisions.
The team is now preparing for the second JN Qualifier, to be held in Sun Valley January 21 & 22. It will be a great weekend of skiing at the SVSEF Lake Creek Training Center!

Waxing For The Drive Fundraiser
Saturday, November 5th from 9:00am - 2:00pm, Wasatch Nordic Ski Academy athletes will again be waxing your classic and skate skis to raise funds for the National Nordic Foundation, a grassroots organization which subsidizes unfunded and underfunded training camps and competition trips attended by qualified athletes that are identified to be the next generation of athletes to represent the US on the world stage.
Bring your skis to 2 locations this year, 'Bout Time Pub & Grub or Storm Cycles. Drop off your skis to be cleaned and waxed, check out what's new at Storm Cycles, and grab breakfast or lunch at 'Bout Time while you wait.
How much will it cost? WNSA is asking for an optional donation to NNF. You want these athletes waxing your skis! As elite Nordic skiers, they have mastered the art of FAST SKIS! They will clean skis with a warm wax scrape, apply a temperature appropriate glide wax and then scrape and brush the skis. They will be ready for your first ski of the season!
NNF has supported many WNSA athletes over the last 12 years. Current WNSA athletes, Maddie Morgan, Sarah Morgan, Jenae Rasmussen and Lina Farra as well as alumni, Karsten Hokanson, Henry Gorman, Ben Grodner, Mia Anderson, Riis Wilbrecht, Tyler Smith, Sophie McDonald, have benefited from NNF funding to help them attend national and international training camps and races.
We have the potential for almost all of our athletes this year to qualify for either national or international championships this winter, as well as national training camps this summer. NNF will help with funding for all of these events. As our athletes move up the pipeline, they will continue to benefit from NNF support.
Sponsor of WNSA, 'Bout Time will be donating 10% of all food sales on Saturday to our fundraiser.
So pull out those skis, come out on the 5th, and help to support not only our athletes, but a great organization!
Bring 2 or more skis to be waxed, and received a discount coupon to 'Bout Time.
Did you know they have over 20 large screen t.v.'s? Bet you'll be able to watch your favorite team!!
